Exploiting the Pico Cell as a PUF and TRNG Reconfigurable Entropy Source
Abstract
This study presents an innovative approach to exploiting the Pico cell as a versatile FPGA entropy source, achieving performance benchmarks that are at the forefront of both physical unclonable functions (PUFs) and true random number generators (TRNGs). The architecture outlined in this research capitalizes on the transient oscillation effect triggered by activation of the Pico cell to establish a TRNG with exceptional throughput. Adhering strictly to NIST compliance standards, even amidst fluctuations in supply voltages and temperatures, the proposed solution guarantees robust and secure random number generation tailored to diverse applications. This comprehensive approach enables the proposed architecture to simultaneously support PUF and TRNG functionalities while improving the understanding of the underlying entropy-generation mechanisms.
